Summary
In Week 52 (December 24–30), the first week of school holidays, hospital visits increased among children under 2 and adults aged 75 and older (+16% and +7%, respectively), decreased among children aged 2–14 (-14%), and remained stable among adults aged 15–74. Hospitalizations following visits were down among 2- to 14-year-olds and stable in other age groups.
Over the past week, there has been an increase in seasonal respiratory illnesses: - Influenza, flu-like illness (+67%, or +961 visits), acute bronchitis (+36%, or +1,033 visits), and ENT conditions (+27%, or +5,155 visits) across all age groups, - Pneumonia (+33%, or +1,285 visits) among adults. We also note an increase in visits for: - Gastroenteritis and vomiting (+60% and 29%, respectively), asthma attacks (+23%), and isolated fever (+13%) among adults, - Infectious conjunctivitis (+30%) and allergies (+19%) across all age groups.
Among the most common conditions, there was an increase in visits for abdominal pain (+14%) in children under 2 years of age, for urinary tract infections in those aged 15–74, and for heart failure in those aged 75 and older. In connection with the holidays, there was a sharp decline in trauma cases (-40%) among children aged 2–14.
