Summary

  • In Week 2 (January 8–14), all-cause emergency department activity declined. This decline was more pronounced among adults (-6%, -20,091 visits) than among children under 2 years of age (-1%, -1,337 visits). Hospitalizations following visits also decreased among children under 2 years of age and adults. However, in the 2–14 age group, there was an increase in visits (+14%, +7,520 visits) and hospitalizations (+16%, +640 hospitalizations).

  • Since the beginning of the year, across all age groups, there has been a decline in visits for seasonal illnesses: - A peak in visits was observed in week 52 (December 25–31, 2018) for influenza/flu-like illness across all ages. Over the past two weeks, there has been a decline in influenza/flu-like illness activity. However, the epidemic curve remains higher than that of the 2016–2017 season. The proportion of hospitalizations (all ages) following visits is also declining. However, among those aged 75 and older, a high proportion of hospitalizations is observed (71%, or 324 hospitalizations). - Among children under 2 years of age, for the past two consecutive weeks, there has been a decrease in visits for bronchiolitis (-51%, -1,873 visits) (peak passed since week 52). Visits across all age groups, in line with the main non-specific indicators, are also declining, with the exception of fainting episodes among children (+14%, +76 visits) and adults (+2%, +156 visits).

  • Among children, the increase in visits for the most common conditions is primarily driven by the 2–14 age group, with injuries (+52%, +7,046 visits) and abdominal pain (+28%, +531 visits).Among adults, the most common conditions include an increase in trauma (+2%, +1,255 visits) and chest pain (+3%, +309 visits). There has also been an increase in strokes among those aged 75 and older.
