Key Points

  • In Week 02 (January 6–12, 2025), compared to the previous week, emergency department visits and subsequent hospitalizations increased among children aged 2–14 (+11%, or +5,683 visits, and +8%, or +390 hospitalizations). They are down among children under 2 years old (-25% and -22%, respectively) and adults, particularly those aged 75 and older (-9.5% and -8%, respectively). However, visits and hospitalizations among people aged 75 and older remain higher than in the previous two years.

  • For this week marking the start of the school year, the increase in visits among children aged 2–14 is primarily driven by trauma (+48%, or +5,606 visits).

  • Visits for seasonal respiratory conditions (influenza/flu-like illness, pneumonia, acute bronchitis, ENT, asthma attacks) are all down compared to the previous week across all age groups. However, visits for influenza/flu-like illness remain higher than in the two previous years during this period. Among children under 2 years of age, the decline in visits for bronchiolitis continues (-42%, or -448 visits).

  • Among other indicators, the increase in visits for suicide attempts observed last week continues among those under 15 years of age (+40%, or +55 visits) and those aged 15–44 (+9%, or +82 visits). Visits are also on the rise for abdominal pain among those aged 2–14 (+23%, or +954 visits), for feeling unwell among those aged 2–14 (+19%, or +92 visits) and those aged 15–74 (+9%, or +585 visits), and for chest pain among those aged 15–74 (+8%, or +800 visits).
