Summary

In Week 05 (January 27–February 2, 2020), total emergency department activity rose slightly among children and adults (up 9.7% and 5%, respectively, or 10,061 and 15,513 visits). Hospitalizations following emergency department visits continued to rise among children (up 4%, or 210 hospitalizations).

Over the past week, the main increase in visits was observed for:

  • respiratory conditions: influenza/flu-like illness among children (+50%, or 3,182 visits) and adults (+65%, or 1,692 visits), accounting for 5.5% and 1.5% of activity in these age groups, respectively; acute bronchitis (+21%, or 532 visits); asthma in adults (+24%, or 240 more visits), ENT conditions (+18%, or 2,955 more visits), and pneumonia (+8%, or 390 more visits);

  • isolated fever (+28%), malaise (+11%), and conjunctivitis (ages 2–14 only) (+41%).

Regarding influenza, all metropolitan regions and the Antilles are in the epidemic phase. French Guiana is entering the pre-epidemic phase.

Visits for gastroenteritis are stable among children and declining among adults, returning to levels comparable to those of the previous two years during this period.

Among people aged 75 and older, there has been an increase in hospital admissions for cardiac decompensation (+9%) and chest pain (+11%), stroke (+9%), and dyspnea/respiratory failure (+10%).
