Summary
In Week 52 (December 23–29), total emergency department activity increased among children under 2 years of age (+11.4%, +3,333 visits) and people aged 75 and older (+5.9%, or +3,020 visits). Hospitalizations following emergency department visits remained stable or decreased across all age groups.
Over the past week, there was a notable increase in visits:
- marked for gastrointestinal conditions among adults: vomiting (+74%, or +833 visits) and gastroenteritis (+175%, or +2,980 visits). To a lesser extent, visits for gastroenteritis rose by 12% among children (+375 visits).
The share of visits for gastroenteritis in total coded activity reached 2.2% for the week, compared to 0.8% in week 51, and 0.9% for vomiting (vs. 0.5% in week 51). These shares are also significantly higher than those of the previous two years. This increase was observed primarily from December 25 to 28 (starting December 24 among those aged 75 and older) and affected all regions.
- For respiratory conditions: influenza/flu-like illness (+38%, or +614 visits across all ages), bronchitis (+25%, or +606 visits across all ages), and among adults only, pneumonia (+16%, or +603 visits) and asthma attacks (+21%, or +208 visits). Six regions are in the pre-epidemic phase for influenza: Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Brittany, Île-de-France, Occitanie, Pays de la Loire, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
Visits for bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age increased by 7% in week 52 (+304 visits). All metropolitan regions and the Antilles (except St. Barthélemy) remain in the epidemic phase.
- Isolated fever in adults (+15%), malaise in those aged 75 and older (+10%), allergies, ENT conditions, and conjunctivitis across all age groups (respectively +22%, +20%, and +17% across all ages).
