OSCOUR National Newsletter, August 28, 2018

Summary

In week 34 (August 20–26), total emergency department activity decreased across all age groups (-4%, or -15,616 visits across all ages). Hospitalizations following emergency department visits were stable or decreased across all age groups.

Seasonal conditions remained stable or decreased across all age groups, with the exception of visits for viral meningitis, which increased among children under 2 years of age (6 visits in Week 34 compared to 1 in Week 33), and for hyperthermia/heatstroke, which increased among adults aged 15–74 (+22.6%, or +12 visits). The associated activity rates are comparable to those of the past two years, with the exception of slightly higher visits for insect bites.

Most non-specific indicators are also stable or declining across all age groups. There was an increase in visits for asthma among children under 2 years of age (+27%, or +27 visits) and those aged 2–14 (+12%, or +53 visits), as well as a slight increase in visits for general malaise among children under 2 years of age (+9%, or +13 visits).

Among the most common conditions, there was a slight increase in visits for gastroenteritis among children under 2 years of age (+4.5%, or +44 visits)—which had already risen in Week 33 (+12%)—and for stroke among people aged 75 and older (+6%, or +72 visits).

In week 34, 5 visits for measles were recorded among children under 2 years of age and 4 visits among adults over 15 years of age (none in week 33 regardless of age).
