OSCOUR National Newsletter, August 21, 2018

Summary

In week 33 (August 13–19), total emergency department activity and hospitalizations following visits were down slightly across all age groups (down 2%, or 6,433 visits, and down 4%, or 2,664 hospitalizations, respectively).

Visits related to non-specific indicators were down, with the exception of asthma among those over 15 years of age (+9%, or +77 visits).

Just like total activity, seasonal conditions are down across all age groups. This decline is significant for indicators directly linked to heat: dehydration (-45%, or 423 fewer visits) and hyperthermia/heatstroke (-76%, or 337 fewer visits).

Among the most common conditions, there was an increase in visits for abdominal pain in children (+11%, or +192 visits) and gastroenteritis in children under 2 years of age (+12%, or +101 visits). Among adults, visits for urinary tract infections (+9%, or +486 visits) and skin infections in those aged 15–74 (+8%, or +313 visits) are on the rise.
