OSCOUR National Newsletter, April 12, 2021
Summary
In Week 14 (April 5–11, 2021), the number of emergency department visits and hospitalizations following such visits decreased among children under 15 years of age (down 22%, or -18,726 visits and -10%, or -882 hospitalizations) and among adults aged 15 and older (-4.5%, or -12,016 visits, and -4%, or -2,545 hospitalizations).
In Week 14, visits for suspected COVID-19 across all age groups and their share of total activity remained stable (12,505 vs. 12,868 visits in Week 13, a decrease of 2.8%, and 4.8% vs. 4.5% in Week 13). By age group, these visits decreased among those aged 2–14 (-25%, or 42 fewer visits) and, to a lesser extent, among those aged 75 and older (-4.5%, or 120 fewer visits); they are stable among those aged 15–74 (-2%, or -208 visits) and increasing among those under 2 years old (+10%, or +8 visits). Suspected COVID-19 is the second most common diagnosis among adults aged 15 and older. The proportion of hospitalizations following a visit across all age groups remains stable at 56%. At the regional level, visits for suspected COVID-19 are stable or declining in all regions except Corsica (+12%, or +4 visits), Guadeloupe (+44%, or +31 visits), and French Guiana (+47%, or +16 visits). Since monitoring began on February 24, 2020, 443,845 emergency department visits for suspected COVID-19 have been recorded.
In the context of school closures, all non-specific and seasonal indicators are declining among children. This is also true for adults, though to a lesser extent. Among the trends in the most common conditions, only the increase in visits for “foreign bodies” among children aged 2–14 (+6.6%, or +36 visits) stands out, as well as for chest pain and gastrointestinal conditions among those aged 15–74 (respectively +5.8% and +5.2%, or +266 and +376 visits).
