Summary

  • In week 14 of 2017 (April 3–9), emergency room visits and hospitalizations for all causes were down slightly by 6% among children and remained stable among adults.

  • Visits for seasonal illnesses were mostly stable or declining across all age groups, with the exception of visits for fever alone, which rose slightly (+3%) among children aged 2–14, and for allergies, which rose by 11% among adults. The proportion of cases involving allergies among all coded cases in this age group is slightly higher than in the previous two years.

  • Among the most frequently seen conditions in emergency departments, there continues to be an increase in visits for conjunctivitis (+9%) and skin problems (+13%) among children under 2 years of age. Among adults, a 13% increase in visits related to alcohol is observed among those aged 15–74. No significant changes were observed among children aged 2–14 and adults aged 75 and older.
