Sexuality and Pre-Adolescence in Disadvantaged Neighborhoods.
For several years now, as part of training sessions for healthcare professionals, the International Center for Children (CIE) has been conducting field-based analyses of specific health issues, specifically to assess the knowledge and information needs of school-aged adolescents—including those in vocational schools and vocational training programs—regarding sexuality and AIDS. This decision stemmed from the observation that these young people face significant difficulties accessing information due to sociocultural factors and the inadequacy of the information provided in school settings. The survey, conducted over the course of a week, also involved educators and specialized organizations in this field. Analysis of the responses revealed significant difficulty in establishing dialogue, as adult role models were rejected and there was a lack of understanding regarding adolescents’ perceptions of sexuality. A project was developed in collaboration with community organizations in the Goutte d’Or neighborhood of Paris and a team from the Ministry of Youth and Sports. It took the form of an educational initiative during a vacation camp for children aged 8 to 12 from diverse ethnic backgrounds, using playful methods (puppets, improvised skits, videos, etc.). A long-term assessment will be conducted. Training for facilitators and better coordination between these stakeholders and the social services network are necessary for effective action.
