Summary of measles surveillance data from January 1, 2008, to September 30, 2019
From January 1, 2008, to September 30, 2019, nearly 30,000 cases of measles were reported in France (including nearly 15,000 cases in 2011 alone).
After falling sharply in 2012, the number of reported cases remained stable in 2013 and 2014;
In 2015, the number of cases rose again (364 cases), linked to a major outbreak in Alsace;
In 2016, lower circulation of the measles virus was noted (79 reported cases), but it intensified in 2017 (523 reported cases), primarily linked to outbreaks in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie, and Grand-Est;
In 2018, viral circulation resumed very actively, with 2,919 reported cases (outbreaks mainly in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie, Pays de la Loire, and Brittany);
During the first 9 months of 2019, the epidemic persisted, with nearly 2,500 reported cases and viral circulation across almost the entire country (92 departments affected), with outbreaks mainly in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie, Pays de la Loire, PACA, and Grand Est. This year also saw the resumption of active measles transmission in the Indian Ocean (Réunion and Mayotte).
