National Surveillance of Infectious Diseases, 1998–2000
This document presents the results of national infectious disease surveillance from 1998 to 2000. It follows on from the annual epidemiological bulletins published in previous years (1997, 1998, 1999). With the diversification of the Institute for Public Health Surveillance’s missions in the field of infectious risks, this document addresses topics not covered in previous editions. Its purpose is to provide standardized information to both those who generate it and those who require it for prevention, expert analysis, or educational purposes. For each topic covered, after a review of the organization of the relevant surveillance system, it provides an overview of the situation in 2000 and describes epidemiological trends in previous years. Thanks to the coordination of an editorial committee, this version is the result of contributions from the Department of Infectious Diseases at the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance, numerous National Reference Centers (CNR), the Pasteur Institute, the Coordination Centers for the Control of Nosocomial Infections (CCLIN), the French Agency for Food Safety (AFSSA), specific surveillance networks, and research units of Inserm. The topics covered include sexually transmitted diseases; HIV infection; hepatitis C; vaccine-preventable diseases; foodborne zoonoses; other zoonoses and subacute spongiform encephalopathies; airborne infections; imported infectious diseases; antibiotic resistance; and nosocomial infections.
