Antibiotic Prescriptions in Private Practice: An Increase in 2024 [Infographic]
In 2024, antibiotic prescriptions in private practice increased by 4.8% compared to 2023, reaching 860.4 prescriptions per 1,000 inhabitants per year. This increase marks a break from the moderate but steady downward trend observed between 2014 and 2023. This change in prescriptions between 2023 and 2024 varies across different age groups, with a stabilization among children aged 0–4 (1,326 prescriptions per 1,000 inhabitants per year, a figure that remains slightly lower than that of 2019, 1,333 prescriptions per 1,000 inhabitants per year), and an increase in the 65–79 and over-80 age groups (1,010 and 1,202 prescriptions per 1,000 inhabitants per year, respectively). The number of prescriptions remains high among children and increased significantly in the third quarter of 2024, in connection with winter infection outbreaks. However, these are predominantly viral and rarely warrant a prescription for antibiotics. Consumption remains above the national target of fewer than 650 prescriptions per 1,000 inhabitants per year by 2027, as set by the National Strategy for Infection Prevention and Antibiotic Resistance. In 2024, France is the second-highest consumer of antibiotics in Europe (up from fifth in 2023).
