Summary of Arbovirus Surveillance in 2019: Transition to Surveillance of Confirmed Cases of Chikungunya, Dengue, and Zika Virus Infection in Metropolitan France
The Aedes albopictus mosquito continues to establish itself in new departments each year in mainland France (51 departments colonized in 2019; 42 in 2018), exposing the population to the risk of local transmission of arboviral diseases. In mainland France, probable and confirmed cases of chikungunya, dengue, and Zika virus infection are notifiable (DO) year-round. In metropolitan departments where the Aedes albopictus mosquito is established, surveillance is “intensified” from May 1 to November 30 through a system of laboratory follow-up for positive results of these arboviruses. Unlike in previous years, and following the 2018 evaluation in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) region of a new surveillance system based solely on the reporting of confirmed or probable cases, the reporting of suspected cases was not encouraged by Santé publique France in 2019. In total, in 2019, 113 confirmed or probable cases of chikungunya, 923 cases of dengue, 17 cases of Zika virus infection, and one case of flavivirus were identified. The percentage of confirmed or probable cases reported by healthcare professionals during the enhanced surveillance period is on the rise: 23% in 2017, 29% in 2018, and 44% in 2019. Healthcare professionals appear to be better informed about the risks of arbovirus importation into mainland France. Efforts are being made to ensure that mosquito control measures are targeted around confirmed cases in order to reduce unnecessary treatments. Nevertheless, raising awareness among travelers and healthcare professionals regarding the risk of an arbovirus epidemic in France is essential to ensure that cases are identified as early as possible.
