New cases of locally transmitted dengue fever in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, France, August–September 2014.
In August and September 2014, four locally acquired cases of dengue were diagnosed in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This marked the third occurrence of local transmission of the dengue virus in this region, which is inhabited by Aedes albopictus (two cases in 2010 and one case in 2013). The two cases identified in the Var department, involving different serotypes, were unrelated, whereas the two cases in the Bouches-du-Rhône department were geographically close and followed a viremic imported case diagnosed abroad but not reported in France. Thanks to the control measures implemented, these outbreaks remained localized in time and space. They nevertheless underscore that the risk of local transmission of the virus is real and that efforts to prevent its spread must be continued in order to prevent the spread of dengue and chikungunya in mainland France.
