Local transmission of chikungunya in two municipalities in the Var department, August–September 2017

Introduction: The chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an arbovirus that is endemic and epidemic in the intertropical zone. It is transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes, such as Ae. albopictus, which has been established in metropolitan France since 2004. In early August 2017, the specific surveillance system for this disease identified a locally acquired case in the Var department, in the town of Le Cannet-des-Maures. In mid-September, a second alert was issued for a new locally acquired case located about ten kilometers away. Methods: Following these two alerts, epidemiological (active case finding) and entomological investigations were conducted to limit disease transmission. Vector control measures were implemented, and healthcare professionals were mobilized for case finding. Results: Between early August and mid-September 2017, 17 locally acquired cases of chikungunya (15 confirmed and 2 probable) were identified in two municipalities in the Var department. The primary imported case, a traveler returning from Cameroon, was identified through the investigation and subsequently confirmed by the National Reference Center for Arboviruses. Entomological surveys were conducted 25 times in the two transmission zones. Discussion-conclusion: This episode of indigenous CHIKV transmission constitutes the ninth outbreak to occur in metropolitan France. The scale of this episode appears to be linked to various factors, including the lack of an arbovirus diagnosis for the first two cases who sought medical care, which highlights the need for awareness and information among healthcare professionals.
