Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of September 3, 2014.
Over the past week in the region:
End of surveillance for heat-related illnesses, which were few and far between this summer;
Enterovirus activity has been low this season, resulting in few cases of meningitis;
A sharp increase in consultations at SOS Médecins Nantes for insect bites, with 111 cases between August 29 and September 2, half of which involved children under 10 years of age. This increase was expected due to mid-August tidal coefficients that led to significant larval production of Aedes caspius in the Loire estuary. These recurring nuisance events were described in BEH No. 21-22/2014 dated July 8, 2014. Based on previous observations, this episode is expected to end quickly, within less than a week. Preventive measures rely on personal protection, including wearing long clothing and applying skin repellents to exposed areas, particularly when outdoors in the evening.
