Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of June 13, 2017.
Over the past week in the region:
An increase in enterovirus meningitis has begun at the Nantes and Angers university hospitals. A more detailed update on enterovirus infections, which are generally mild, will be provided next week. Since 2015, France has observed an increase in the incidence of invasive meningococcal infections caused by serogroup W, with a high case fatality rate, linked to the spread of a new variant. With 4 cases reported over the past 10 months, the Pays de la Loire region remains less affected compared to other regions. This situation calls for vigilance and underscores the importance of sending every meningococcal strain to the National Reference Center for Genotyping. A new increase in consultations for insect bites (SOS Médecins Nantes) has been observed since this weekend. This phenomenon follows the recent high-tide event (Ascension weekend), which caused an outbreak of Aedes caspius mosquito eggs in the Loire estuary. These recurring nuisance events have been described in the following BEH: http://invs.santepubliquefrance.fr/beh/2014/21-22/2014_21-22_2.html. Based on previous observations, this episode should end quickly, within less than a week. The severity of inflammatory reactions, though not serious, is frequently a source of concern for parents of young children. SOS Médecins has also noted an increase in consultations for tick removal. Prevention of these bites and vigilance regarding the appearance of signs of Lyme disease are detailed in a brochure available at the following address: http://inpes.santepubliquefrance.fr/CFESBases/catalogue/pdf/1712.pdf
