Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of January 6, 2015.

Over the past week in the region:

An overall increase in all indicators related to bronchiolitis, gastroenteritis, and flu-like illnesses. Emergency department activity reached very high levels last week for infants under one year of age and adults aged 75 and older. This spike was likely amplified by strike action, which complicates the interpretation of the data.- The bronchiolitis outbreak is subsiding in the western part of the region and is expected to decline very rapidly over the next week. In the eastern part of the region, the outbreak began later, with a slower decline expected. RSV isolates at Angers University Hospital remain high. - Confirmation of the onset of the gastroenteritis (GE) outbreak diagnosed by SOS Médecins and emergency departments over the past two weeks. - Influenza activity is increasing in the region, with the first week exceeding alert thresholds (SOS Médecins and emergency department visits). The identified viruses are predominantly type A. Four cases of severe influenza have been hospitalized in intensive care over the past 10 days. - Outbreaks of acute respiratory infections (ARI) and gastroenteritis (GE) in long-term care facilities are on the rise, with 12 new outbreaks in the past week, mostly involving gastroenteritis.
