Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of January 2, 2013.
Over the past week in the region:
A combination of bronchiolitis, gastroenteritis, and flu outbreaks has led to a surge in visits to hospital emergency departments by infants and the elderly, well above alert thresholds.
A marked increase in flu cases reported by the two SOS Médecins associations over the past three weeks; the epidemic threshold for flu cases reported by the unified Grog/Sentinelle network has been exceeded; and one new case of severe flu has been hospitalized in intensive care in the region. The flu epidemic appears to have started earlier in the western part of the region than in the eastern departments.
The gastroenteritis (GE) outbreak has intensified over the past week, with a 50% increase in cases reported by the SOS Médecins associations and a rise in GE outbreaks in the region’s long-term care facilities since early December.
Slow decline in the bronchiolitis outbreak, with a still significant number of bronchiolitis cases seen in emergency departments and cases hospitalized at Nantes University Hospital (6th week of the outbreak with 422 emergency department visits and 207 hospitalizations since week 47).
