Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of January 16, 2013.

Over the past week in the region:

A sharp decrease in emergency room visits for infants and the elderly (the first week below alert thresholds). This trend needs to be confirmed in the coming week.

Moderate flu outbreak with an equal distribution of A and B viruses in the region. A decrease has been observed by both SOS Médecins associations over the past two weeks, while the unified Grog/Sentinelles network reports a slight increase; 10 cases of severe flu have been hospitalized in intensive care in the region since late November.

A major gastroenteritis outbreak persisted over the past week, with a continued high number of GEA outbreaks in nursing homes across the region. The new norovirus variant, identified at the European level, is implicated in the majority of clusters of gastroenteritis cases reported to the CNR. In the region, of the 5 confirmed norovirus outbreaks in nursing homes, 3 are linked to the new 2012 variant.

The bronchiolitis outbreak is subsiding, with a significant decrease in bronchiolitis cases seen by both the SOS Médecins associations and the emergency departments at Nantes University Hospital.
