Epidemiological Surveillance in the Pays de la Loire Region. Update as of December 13, 2016.
Over the past week in the region:
Confirmation of the bronchiolitis outbreak in the region by all surveillance systems (SOS Médecins, pediatric emergency departments, and virology laboratories at the Nantes and Angers university hospitals). The outbreak is much milder than in previous years and began later in Nantes (a 2-week delay) than in Angers.
Influenza activity indicators are characteristic of a pre-epidemic period: an increase in influenza-like illnesses, with the threshold for SOS Médecins consultations being exceeded. The first two cases of severe influenza have been reported in the region by intensive care units. The virology laboratories at both university hospitals have identified an increase in isolates of influenza A virus. National subtyping shows a predominance of the A(H3N2) virus. This subtype primarily affects the elderly. Five new outbreaks of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) have been reported over the past week in nursing homes in the region. The current epidemiological situation indicates a probable phenomenon of viral interference between the influenza A(H3N2) virus, which is expected to soon supplant the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The Christmas holidays could be a transition period with a combination of the two epidemics.
The number of SOS Médecins consultations for gastroenteritis remains high. This outbreak has had little impact on pediatric hospital emergency departments, suggesting the circulation of norovirus.
