Heavy episodic drinking

  • In 2021, 22.6% of adults aged 18–75 reported having monthly heavy drinking episodes; this proportion has increased significantly since 2017 (17.8%). This proportion differs significantly from the national average (16.5%).

  • Significant increases were observed in 2021 among men, women, those aged 31–45, low-income individuals, and those with a high school diploma or higher.

Exceeding low-risk consumption guidelines

  • In 2021, 27.9% of adults aged 18 to 75 reported exceeding the consumption guidelines. This proportion is significantly higher than the national average (22%).

  • This proportion was significantly higher among men (31.6%) compared to women (17.9%).

Emergency room visits directly related to alcohol

  • In 2023, 8,523 emergency room visits directly related to alcohol were recorded, compared to 11,017 in 2017.

  • The proportion of emergency room visits directly related to alcohol also decreased between 2017 and 2023, ending at 1.30% in 2023 (versus 1.08% nationally).

  • The departments with the highest rates of emergency room visits directly related to alcohol were Mayenne, Sarthe, and Loire-Atlantique.
