A Study of Factors Associated with Career Outcomes Following Surgery for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in the Pays de la Loire Region.
The objective was to study the occupational prognosis following surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome. Patients who underwent surgery in 2002–2003 in the Pays de la Loire region completed a self-administered questionnaire. A total of 1,248 questionnaires were returned (62%); 253 men and 682 women reported being employed at the time of surgery. The factors identified as associated with a poor occupational prognosis were: concurrent surgery for another musculoskeletal disorder of the upper limb, the “manual laborers” socio-professional category, sick leave due to an occupational disease, and the patient attributing the condition to an occupational cause. This study highlights the involvement of multiple factors that must be taken into account for occupational prognosis. (R.A.)
