Tuberculosis in Mayotte. 2022 Report.

Key Points

  • The standardized incidence rate in Mayotte (14.1 per 100,000 inhabitants) is more than double that recorded in mainland France (6.1 per 100,000). It is the second highest recorded in all of France after French Guiana (23.6 per 100,000 inhabitants).

  • The standardized incidence rate stabilized in 2022 compared to the previous two years. A decline in this indicator was recorded in 2021 compared to previous years, likely largely due to the COVID-19 health crisis.

  • The standardized case rate has continued to decline overall over the past 10 years in Mayotte, as it has at the national level. In 2022, this rate was lower than those recorded in the years preceding the pandemic.

  • The incidence of tuberculosis is higher among men.

  • It is steadily decreasing among those over 40, and half of the cases reported over the past five years involve young adults (ages 25–39). The average age of cases is 31.

  • Reported cases of active tuberculosis primarily involve highly vulnerable individuals who have recently arrived from areas or countries with high tuberculosis endemicity.
