Surveillance of Rift Valley Fever in Mayotte. Epidemiological update as of August 28, 2019.

Summary

  • Between November 22, 2018, and July 30, 2019, 143 cases of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) were confirmed by the laboratory at the Mayotte Hospital Center (CHM).

  • Of these, 127 cases (88.8%) were investigated by the Vector Control Unit (LAV) and the Surveillance, Alert, and Health Management Unit (CVAGS) of the ARS OI and the Regional Public Health France Unit in Mayotte:

    • 86 cases (60.1%) had direct contact with farm animals or their bodily fluids (including milk)

    • 19 cases (13.3%) lived near livestock farms

    • 22 cases (15.4%) had no identified exposure

  • 2 complications occurred 3 weeks after the onset of symptoms: impaired visual acuity and meningoencephalitis.

  • No human cases or animal outbreaks have been reported in the past 4 weeks. This stability in epidemic and epizootic indicators marks the end of the epidemic and the epizootic.

  • The highest level of vigilance must be maintained to limit the risk of a new outbreak of the epidemic and epizootic disease with the onset of the rainy season.
