Reunion Public Health Bulletin. May 2018.

Key Points

  • Vaccination coverage (VC) for DTP-Coq-Hib was over 95% in 2016, but down from 2015.

  • VCO for hepatitis B was 95% in 2016, but also declined compared to 2015.

  • VCO for pneumococcal disease did not reach the 95% target and was also lower than in 2015.

  • Vaccination coverage rates for measles and meningococcal C remain insufficient to prevent any risk of an epidemic.

  • Vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV) among young girls is largely insufficient. Prevention efforts should be undertaken to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer, including: - promoting this vaccination among girls aged 11 to 14, ideally before they become sexually active, but also among children and adolescents who have undergone transplants or are living with HIV, and among men who have or have had sexual relations with other men up to the age of 26, in order to reduce the number of HPV infections; - promoting Pap smear screening to detect precancerous lesions as early as possible.

  • In Réunion, the proportion of people in favor of vaccination is high (83%).
