Epidemiological Situation

The seasonal influenza epidemic in Mayotte began early this year (according to the sentinel physician network in week 39: October 25–November 1). For several years, surveillance data have shown an increase in influenza-like illnesses during the rainy season, particularly from January to March. In 2016, this seasonal pattern was confirmed by the identification of influenza viruses at the CHM laboratory, as part of the virological surveillance program initiated that same year. In 2017, early activity was observed as early as week 39 and intensified over the following weeks, peaking in week 45 (November 6–12). For the past three weeks, it appears that the flu epidemic is entering a decline phase; however, the proportion of consultations for flu-like illness remains above seasonal averages. This decline in the epidemic will need to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
