Chido in Mayotte. Bulletin of January 30, 2025.

Key Points

  • At the Mayotte Hospital Center (CHM), a downward trend in emergency department visits was observed in 2025-S04 (January 20–26) (965 visits compared to 1,071 in 2025-S03), and 4 deaths were reported (1 infant under 6 months of age and 3 adults aged 50 and older). The main reasons for seeking emergency care remained wounds and trauma, followed by gastrointestinal symptoms, the proportion of which decreased after the increase observed in previous weeks.

  • In week 2025-S04, ESCRIM recorded an average of 127 patients per day, representing relative stability compared to week 2025-S03 but a decrease compared to the previous three weeks. The proportion of trauma cases among visits (27%) and that of acute diarrhea (12%) remained relatively stable compared to week 2025-S03. Visits directly or indirectly related to the cyclone accounted for only 10% of visits.

  • In referral medical centers (CMRs), visits for digestive disorders were more frequent than those for trauma in week 2025-S04.

  • In sentinel pharmacies, the percentage of sales of anti-diarrheal medications and oral rehydration solutions (ORS) increased during week 2025-S04, reaching over 7% (a proportion significantly higher than the maximum recorded over the past six years).

  • Regarding surveillance related to acute gastroenteritis, the rate of samples testing positive for at least one enteric pathogen has remained relatively stable at a high level since late December (82% in 2025-S04).

  • The destruction of infrastructure and limited access to drinking water increase the risk of waterborne diseases (cholera, typhoid fever, rotavirus gastroenteritis), leptospirosis, as well as respiratory infections such as bronchiolitis.
