Public Health Surveillance in the Midi-Pyrénées Region. Epidemiological Update as of July 23, 2015.

Ebola Virus: Epidemiological Update as of July 21, 2015In Liberia, as of July 21, 2015, the Ministry of Health has confirmed six cases of Ebola since June 29, 2015, the date on which the first case was reported since the end of the epidemic in the country, as announced by the WHO on May 9, 2015. Investigations into the origin of the resurgence of cases in the country are still ongoing. Preliminary genomic sequencing data strongly suggests that the most likely cause of transmission is a re-emergence of the virus from a survivor in the country. As a reminder, Liberia was added to the risk zone in the InVS case definition on July 1. As of July 15, 2015, the WHO reports a total of 27,678 cases (suspected, probable, and confirmed) and 11,276 deaths in the three countries (Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia), which are predominantly affected in West Africa. MERS-CoV: Update on surveillance of infections linked to the novel coronavirus On May 20, 2015, South Korea notified the WHO of the first case of MERS-CoV diagnosed in the country in a man returning from the Arabian Peninsula. As of July 21, 2015, 186 cases, including 36 deaths, had been confirmed by South Korean health authorities. Of the 186 cases, 136 have recovered and 14 are currently undergoing treatment. The observed case fatality rate is 19%. As a reminder, 20% of the cases are healthcare workers. As of July 21, 2015, 22 contacts are being monitored. In France, the return of pilgrims from Mecca could lead to an increase in reports of suspected cases in the coming weeks.
