Public Health Surveillance in the Midi-Pyrénées Region. Epidemiological Update as of February 19, 2015.

The flu epidemic is nearing its peak nationwide and showing a downward trend in the Midi-Pyrénées region. Nationwide, the number of outpatient visits for flu-like symptoms is increasing, but at a slower rate than in previous weeks: the peak is expected to be near. The epidemic is dominated by the A(H3N2) virus. In week 7, the national incidence rate was 940 per 100,000 outpatient visits for flu-like symptoms, representing more than 600,000 new cases in week 7 and 2,100,000 cases since the start of the epidemic. Older adults are the most severely affected: The number of hospitalizations continues to rise, especially among people aged 65 and older. Outbreaks of acute respiratory infections in elderly care facilities are also particularly frequent. In Midi-Pyrénées, influenza indicators remain high, though there is a downward trend in the number of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness. According to facilities participating in the Oscour® network, the number of emergency room visits is stable compared to the previous week. Since the start of surveillance, 49 severe cases hospitalized in intensive care have been reported to the Midi-Pyrénées Regional Health Agency (7 cases hospitalized in week 7).
