Public Health Surveillance in Languedoc-Roussillon. Epidemiological Update as of July 17, 2014.

Key Points

  • Vector-borne diseases: Since the start of enhanced surveillance for chikungunya and dengue, 71 reports of clinically suggestive cases of either disease have been received. Of these, 35 were confirmed as chikungunya and 6 as dengue. All of these cases contracted the disease while traveling in an endemic area (imported cases). To date, no indigenous cases have been reported in our region. Rapid intervention by vector control services around imported cases helps prevent the transmission of the virus to mosquitoes, which could then infect other people who have not traveled.

  • Hospital and medical activity in the region: no particular trend is currently observed; the proportion of people not usually residing in the region who are visiting the region’s emergency departments is increasing.
