Public Health Surveillance in Languedoc-Roussillon. Epidemiological Update as of July 10, 2014.

Key Points

  • Vector-borne diseases: Since the start of enhanced surveillance for chikungunya and dengue, 62 reports of clinically suggestive cases of one or the other of these diseases have been received. Of these, 30 were confirmed as chikungunya and 6 as dengue. All of these cases contracted the disease while traveling in an endemic area: these are referred to as imported cases. To date, no indigenous cases have been reported in our region. The rapid response of vector control services around imported cases helps prevent the virus from being transmitted to mosquitoes, which could then infect other people who have not traveled.

  • Hospital and medical activity in the region: the proportion of patients not usually residing in the Languedoc-Roussillon region who visit the region’s emergency departments is increasing, as it does every year at this time; there is no particular trend in the clusters of diagnoses monitored during this time of year.
