Key Points

  • Mental health disorders in adults (18 years or older): decrease in mental health disorders in emergency departments in 2023 compared to 2022 (-8%), particularly among those aged 18–24 (-15%) and 25–49 (-6%).

  • Mental health disorders in children (under 18): a decrease in mental health disorders in emergency departments in 2023 compared to 2022 (-4%), particularly among 15- to 17-year-olds (-19%). A seasonal decrease in activity is regularly observed (July and August).

  • Suicidal acts (ages 11 and older): a decrease in suicidal acts in emergency departments in 2023 compared to 2022 (-12%), particularly among those aged 11–17 (-20%). Seasonal patterns are observed, with a decrease in cases during the summer among younger individuals (ages 11–17 and 18–24).

  • Eating disorders in children (under 18): The annual number of eating disorders coded in emergency departments is relatively low for the region, with no clear trend emerging since 2021.

  • Anxiety disorders in adults (18 years and older): a decrease in the number of emergency department visits among those 18 years and older (-6%), stability among those 0–17 years (-2%), 11–14 years (+6%), and 15–17 years (-6%). Seasonal trend with a summer decline among those under 18.

  • Anxiety (18 and older): Number of SOS Médecins calls for anxiety increased in 2023 compared to 2022 (+26%)

  • Depression (18 and older): a sharp increase in calls to SOS Médecins for depressive symptoms in 2023 compared to 2022 (+36%), against a backdrop of overall increased activity by SOS Médecins associations in the region.
