Heat Wave Monitoring in the Midi-Pyrénées Region. Epidemiological Update as of August 19, 2012

The heat wave that began on Friday is expected to continue through the first half of next week and is moving northward and eastward across the country. Emergency room visit data (total visits, those over 75, and heat-related illnesses) show no significant increase over the past few days, both nationally and regionally (Aquitaine, Midi-Pyrénées, Auvergne, Burgundy, Limousin).Today, temperatures will remain fairly similar to yesterday’s, reaching 35 to 38 degrees in the departments under alert, and locally 39 to 40 degrees from eastern Limousin to the Dordogne and from the Lot to the Tarn.Minimum temperatures tonight will drop slightly, still reaching 20 to 22 degrees in eastern Aquitaine and the Toulouse area. Minimum temperatures on Monday morning will remain high, ranging from 19 to 23 degrees. It is not until Monday afternoon that maximum temperatures will begin to drop. This decline will continue over the following days. Consequently, the heat wave is expected to begin easing on Monday, with the westernmost departments being the first to be removed from the heat advisory.
