Health Surveillance in Languedoc-Roussillon. Epidemiological Update as of November 4, 2015.
Key Points
Vector-borne diseases: The period of enhanced surveillance for dengue and chikungunya cases extends through November 30, the date on which the tiger mosquito is expected to begin its diapause. To date, 222 suspected cases have been investigated, among which 12 imported dengue cases have been confirmed, as well as 2 imported chikungunya cases. Regarding the cluster of locally acquired dengue cases in Nîmes, the total remains at 6 confirmed cases and 1 probable case (which cannot be biologically confirmed).Following the occurrence of these locally transmitted cases, the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) and the Languedoc-Roussillon Regional Health Agency are conducting a public health study on dengue fever in the affected neighborhood (Mas de Ville neighborhood in Nîmes). The results of this study will provide a better understanding of how the dengue virus circulated over the past few weeks and what measures can be taken to better control its spread. Investigators—public health professionals who will be clearly identified—will visit residents’ homes. They will ask questions about symptoms of the disease, the nuisance caused by mosquitoes, residents’ practices for protecting themselves, and their perceptions and suggestions regarding the information received during this outbreak. They will offer residents the option of providing a drop of blood from their fingertip to determine whether they have been exposed to the dengue virus. Since the disease can go unnoticed, only a serological test can confirm the diagnosis. This will help estimate the actual number of cases during this outbreak as well as its extent. This survey will take place from November 6 to 20 and involves all residents of the neighborhood. A high level of resident participation is necessary to obtain meaningful results and to improve the fight against dengue in our region, where the tiger mosquito is now well established.
