Health Surveillance in Languedoc-Roussillon. Epidemiological Update as of June 19, 2014.

Key Points

  • Vector-borne diseases: Since May 1, 2014, the departments of Aude, Gard, Hérault, and Pyrénées-Orientales have been subject to enhanced surveillance for chikungunya and dengue; Currently, 37 reports of clinically suggestive cases of chikungunya or dengue have been received, of which 17 have been confirmed as chikungunya and 3 as dengue. All of these cases contracted the disease while traveling in an endemic area: these are referred to as imported cases. To date, no indigenous cases have been reported within our region.

  • Extreme heat: Last week was marked by rising temperatures in the region and more broadly across France. However, all departments in the region remained at the “seasonal watch” level, and no IBM thresholds were exceeded. Monitoring conducted as part of the Heat Wave and Health Alert System (SACS) detected increases in some of the monitored indicators (number of cases of dizziness, heatstroke, dehydration, and hyponatremia) at both the regional and national levels; these increases remained within expected ranges given the current heat wave conditions. It should be noted that the hospitalization rate for these various diagnostic categories did not increase.
