Acute Respiratory Infections and Gastroenteritis in Occitanie. Bulletin of January 23, 2025.
Key points
Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI)
In Week 03, activity for acute respiratory infections across all age groups remained stable in primary care and continued to decline in hospitals. A significant portion of ARI activity was linked to consultations for influenza viruses (69% at SOS Médecins and 48% in emergency departments).
Bronchiolitis
Activity continues to decline for bronchiolitis, both in hospitals and at SOS Médecins in Occitanie.
Influenza and influenza-like illness
The Occitanie region was in S03 during its 6th epidemic week. In primary care, indicators continued to rise slightly among SOS Médecins associations and in clinical laboratories, while showing a slight decline among doctors in the Sentinelles network.
In hospitals, the decline in emergency department visits for influenza-like illness observed last week leveled off, and this indicator remained stable in S03 compared to S02. Hospitalizations following emergency department visits and the positivity rate in hospital laboratories, however, continued to decline. Indicator levels remained very high and exceeded those observed during the epidemic peaks of the two previous seasons.
Particular attention should be paid to influenza circulation among children under 15 years of age. Indeed, in this age group, all indicators (SOS Médecins, emergency department visits, and hospitalizations following visits) are on the rise and have reached very high levels. In this age group, influenza-like illnesses account for 24.3% of activity at SOS Médecins clinics, 7.0% of emergency room visits, and 7.7% of all hospitalizations.
Nationwide, all regions of France were experiencing an epidemic with marked severity, characterized by consistently high hospital activity and a still significant impact in terms of deaths.
COVID-19
In Week 03, regional indicators remained stable at low levels.
Nationally, activity was generally stable and at low levels.
Gastroenteritis and Acute Diarrhea
In the Occitanie region, SOS Médecins calls increased sharply in week 03 compared to the previous week, particularly among children under 15. This trend differed from what was observed in general practice (Sentinelles + IQVIA) and in hospital settings within the Oscour® network (which showed a decrease compared to the previous week).
