At the maternity ward of Montpellier University Hospital, a program providing support to pregnant women with substance use disorders during their pregnancy—including a period of hospitalization—has reduced the rate of newborn placement from 60% to less than 4%. This remarkable result is the product of a collaborative effort by healthcare professionals, pregnancy-centered medical care, active listening, and a willingness to acknowledge the difficulties and feelings of guilt expressed by these women.
