Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of July 25, 2013.

Mortality
During the first two weeks of July, the mortality rates recorded in the region’s sentinel municipalities were close to the expected values for this period.

Emergency room visits among vulnerable populations
A decrease in emergency room visits has been observed among those aged 75 and older. No significant changes to note regarding emergency room visits for children under 1 year of age.

Reportable Diseases (MDO)
No notable changes this week.

Chickenpox:
Use of SOS Médecins services has fallen below the alert threshold but remains high.

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) Both
nationally and regionally, the number of AGE-related visits to hospital emergency departments and private practices is low, in line with expected levels for this period.

Vector-borne diseases
In Lot-et-Garonne, since the resumption of enhanced surveillance for chikungunya and dengue, one imported case of dengue has been confirmed by the National Reference Center for Arboviruses.

Asthma and Allergies Asthma
activity is trending downward nationally but remains stable in Aquitaine. Emergency department visits for allergies are also trending downward.

Heat-related illnesses
Visits to emergency departments (Oscour®) and calls to SOS Médecins for heat-related illnesses remain high in Aquitaine. The current level is similar to that observed in 2011. It should be noted that heat-related activity for SOS Médecins Bordeaux (2.2%) is comparable to that of 2011 (2.2%) but remains below the 2006 level (3.3%). According to SOS Médecins, heatstroke cases remain more prevalent than dehydration cases, and according to Oscour®, there is an equal distribution of the targeted conditions (hyperthermia and heatstroke, dehydration and hyponatremia).

Enterovirus
meningitis Since S22, there has been a stable trend in enterovirus isolates at the Bordeaux University Hospital, consistent with the number of enterovirus meningitis cases in the Oscour® network. Nationally, the trend according to Oscour® is consistent with 2012 and 2011.

Jellyfish stings (indicator not detailed in the body of the document)
Jellyfish stings have been observed along the entire Aquitaine coast. A few cases of minor stings have been reported. The ARS urges caution.
