Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of July 24, 2014.

Mortality: The number of deaths recorded based on civil registry data remains stable and close to expected levels for this period.

Emergency room visits by vulnerable populations: The number of emergency room visits among children under 1 year of age has remained stable, close to the alert threshold for three consecutive weeks; no significant changes for those aged 75 and older.

Reportable Diseases (MDO)No unusual situation; 3 cases of Legionnaires’ disease and 3 cases of foodborne illness reported in July.

Chikungunya and dengue: enhanced surveillance Since May 1, when enhanced surveillance began in Lot-et-Garonne and Gironde—where the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is established—62 suspected cases have been reported.Among these, 20 cases of chikungunya, 9 cases of dengue, and 1 co-infection have been confirmed, all of which were imported. To date, no locally acquired cases have been identified.

Acute gastroenteritis: Low activity, in line with expectations, in Aquitaine and France.

Asthma and allergiesAccording to OSCOUR® and SOS Médecins, activity is stable for allergies and slightly increasing for asthma in Aquitaine; indicators are rising nationally; forecast: low to moderate allergy risk (grasses) in the region.

Heat-related illnesses: Increased activity in week 29 according to OSCOUR® and SOS Médecins in Aquitaine and nationally; trend consistent with the heat wave observed on July 17 and 18. No heat wave forecast by Météo France.

Enterovirus meningitis: Since week 26, an increase in the number of enteroviruses isolated by the Bordeaux University Hospital, which aligns with the number of viral meningitis cases reported by the OSCOUR® network.
