Public Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of January 14, 2016.

Mortality: After consolidation, the mortality rate recorded in week 52 was just above the alert thresholds. This threshold was not exceeded in week 53 (subject to data completeness).

Emergency department visits by vulnerable populations: Emergency department activity for children under 1 year of age continues to decline and has fallen below the alert threshold; activity for those aged 75 and older is stable and remains close to the alert threshold.

Reportable Diseases (MDO)No unusual situations have been observed since early January 2016.

Carbon monoxide poisoningSince September 1, 2015, 22 incidents have been reported in Aquitaine, including 10 related to boilers/water heaters, 3 to the use of barbecues/fire pits, and 4 to generators. In total, 44 people had to be transported to the emergency room.

Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE)In Aquitaine, significant epidemic activity with the epidemic threshold exceeded for SOS Médecins consultations. In France, sustained activity in primary care, especially among children.

Influenza: Influenza activity remains low in Aquitaine, as in all regions of the metropolitan area and across Europe. In Aquitaine, there were no severe cases of influenza and 2 clustered cases of acute respiratory infection (ARI) in week 01.

Bronchiolitis: A significant decline in SOS Médecins activity was observed, with 6.3% of cases involving children under 2 years of age, meaning activity has fallen below alert thresholds. The decline in epidemic activity is also evident in emergency departments (14.9% of visits among children under 2 years of age), the AquiRespi network (96 cases treated), and the virology laboratory at Bordeaux University Hospital (8 positive samples). The epidemic peak has passed in all French regions.

Respiratory Virology and Enterovirus MeningitisOne case of enterovirus meningitis reported by the Bordeaux University Hospital laboratory and 3 cases reported by the Oscour® network. Among the 34 positive respiratory virus tests, 15 were rhinoviruses and 8 were RSV. No samples tested positive for influenza.

Chickenpox: A decline in activity following the intense activity observed in Aquitaine during weeks 52 and 53 of 2015.
