Public Health Monitoring in the Limousin Region. Update as of August 31, 2012
Headlines - Ebola (Bundibugyo strain) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
As of August 28, 18 cases of Ebola, including 12 deaths, have been reported since June 2012 in the Haut-Uélé and Bas-Uélé districts of Orientale Province (DRC). Test results are positive for the Ebola-Bundibugyo strain (EBOB). The latest reported cases indicate a potential geographic spread within Orientale Province and toward North Kivu Province. Outbreaks of hemorrhagic fever (Ebola, Marburg) are regularly reported in the DRC. This is the first time the EBOB strain has been reported in the DRC. This outbreak is not linked to the current Ebola outbreak in Uganda, in Kibaale (the "Ebola Sudan" strain). The dynamics of Ebola outbreaks remain poorly understood. Nevertheless, the simultaneous occurrence of two distinct outbreaks (two different viral strains) in relatively close proximity is highly unusual. This event is occurring in an isolated region, and the international impact remains very limited at this stage. The Congolese Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization, and Doctors Without Borders have implemented active case finding and management measures at the local level.
