Heat Wave and Health Alert System in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Summary of the 2016 Summer.
In summary
An atypical weather situation characterized by a succession of heat waves (July 17–20 and August 23–28) and heat waves, some of which occurred late in the season.
Exceedances of Météo-France’s biometeorological indicator thresholds were observed in the Charente-Maritime department during the first heatwave and in the Landes and Pyrénées-Atlantiques departments during the second heatwave.
An orange heat wave alert was issued for the departments of Charente-Maritime, Charente, Deux-Sèvres, Vienne, and Haute-Vienne during the first heat wave and for the departments of Landes, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Creuse, Gironde, Charente, Vienne, and Haute-Vienne during the second heat wave.
An impact on morbidity was observed through the use of emergency medical services (SOS Médecins and Oscour®), particularly during the first heat wave and both heatwave episodes.
No excess mortality was observed in Nouvelle-Aquitaine during the heat waves (unlike what was observed in Metropolitan France (+8.7%)).
These results confirm the link between exposure to extreme heat and health and underscore the importance of anticipating heat waves and the value of an information and prevention system.
