Health Surveillance in the Aquitaine Region. Epidemiological Update as of April 9, 2015.

MortalitySince mid-March, mortality rates have been in line with typical levels for this time of year. Over the first 13 weeks of 2015, winter mortality in the region was 17% higher than expected (15% nationally).

Emergency room visits by vulnerable populationsAccording to available data, emergency room activity for those aged 75 and older and for children under 1 year of age remains close to expected levels for this time of year.

Notifiable Diseases (ND)No unusual situation this week.

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE)Moderate activity, declining in Aquitaine. Nationally, activity is declining but remains higher than in 2014 for this period.

Influenza and influenza-like illnesses: The epidemic has ended in mainland France and in Aquitaine, with indicators returning to baseline levels. In the region, 2.0% of activity is influenza-related for SOS Médecins (compared to 2.6% in S13-2015) and remains at 0.1% for Oscour®.

Bronchiolitis: Activity among children under 2 years of age has increased slightly, particularly among SOS Médecins groups; however, the number of consultations for bronchiolitis remains relatively low. Activity within the AquiRespi network also increased during the last on-call shift, with 68 cases treated.

Respiratory virology and enterovirus meningitis: A sharp decline in the circulation of influenza viruses according to the Bordeaux University Hospital. Only one positive sample for influenza B was detected, and 50% of positive samples were for rhinovirus.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning (Update as of 03/26/15)Since September 2014, there have been 51 incidents of CO poisoning affecting 159 people in Aquitaine (2 deaths). Nationally, 984 cases have been reported since September 2014, compared to 1,009 during the previous season.
