Leading Causes of Death in Île-de-France. 2023 Report.
Key Points
In 2023, 78,047 deaths were recorded among residents of Île-de-France, representing a standardized annual rate of 686 per 100,000 inhabitants.
A decrease of 4,387 deaths (all causes combined) was observed in 2023 compared to 2022, on a per 100,000-inhabitant basis.
Male mortality remained higher than female mortality in 2023, with a standardized rate of 866 per 100,000 men, compared to 553 per 100,000 women.
Tumors, circulatory system diseases, and respiratory system diseases were the three leading causes of death in Île-de-France and in each of its departments in 2023. It is crucial to continue efforts to prevent risk factors (tobacco, alcohol, physical inactivity, etc.), which have a significant impact on the health of residents of Île-de-France.
Contrary to the national trend, where external causes were the third leading cause of death, respiratory diseases held this position in Île-de-France.
It is also essential to strengthen prevention efforts against external causes of morbidity and mortality—the fourth leading cause of death in the region—which are primarily linked to accidents of daily life, suicides and self-inflicted injuries, as well as accidental falls.
There was a marked decline in Covid-19-related mortality, which dropped to the 11th leading cause of death in 2023.
Among the major causes of mortality at the regional level, the age-standardized mortality rate for certain conditions originating in the perinatal period was the only one significantly higher than the national level.
All other age-standardized mortality rates in Île-de-France were lower than those observed at the national level.
