Key points

Bronchiolitis

Indicators are rising in hospital emergency departments and falling at SOS Médecins; second week of the pre-epidemic phase.

  • SOS Médecins: In week 04, the number of cases of bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age was slightly down (n = 67 in W04 versus n = 74 in W03). The proportion of bronchiolitis cases among SOS Médecins’ activities remained stable, accounting for 4.8% of cases in this age group.

  • Oscour®: In week 04, the number of visits for bronchiolitis among children under 2 years of age increased by 32% compared to the previous week, representing an increase of 135 visits for the entire region (n = 563), but a slight decrease was observed in Paris. The proportion of activity related to bronchiolitis rose from 10.7% to 13.2% of emergency department activity in this age group and across the entire region, exceeding the epidemic threshold for the second time since monitoring began. More than 90% of visits for bronchiolitis involved infants under 1 year of age. The number of visits followed by hospitalization continued to rise (+54 hospitalizations compared to the previous week).

  • Ile-de-France Bronchiolitis Network: The Bronchiolitis Network has suspended its activities since January 17, 2021.

  • Indicators are rising in hospital emergency departments and falling at SOS Médecins.

  • The region remains in the pre-epidemic phase for the second week.

Gastroenteritis

Rise in surveillance indicators in primary care and among children under 5 at SOS Médecins.

  • SOS Médecins: In week 04, the number of medical procedures for gastroenteritis across all age groups was stable (at 937 procedures). Activity for gastroenteritis across all age groups was stable at 7.5% of procedures  Low activity level. Among children under 5 years of age, the number of medical procedures for gastroenteritis increased slightly (+6% with 255 procedures vs. 240 in Week 3) and accounted for 7.1% of activity in this age group (compared to 6.6% the previous week).

  • Oscour®: In week 04, the number of hospital emergency department visits for gastroenteritis across all age groups remained stable compared to the previous week (with 583 visits). The share of gastroenteritis in overall activity, across all age groups, was stable and accounted for 1.3% of coded visits: a low level of activity. The number of visits for gastroenteritis among children under 5 years of age was stable compared to the previous week (with 371 visits) and still accounted for 4.8% of activity in this age group. The hospitalization rate for gastroenteritis was 10% across all age groups and 10.5% among children under 5 years of age. Gastroenteritis accounted for 0.8% of the total number of hospitalizations (4.7% among children under 5).

  • Sentinel Network: In week 04, the regional incidence rate of consultations for acute diarrhea was estimated at 107 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, 95% confidence interval: [68–146], a sharp increase compared to the consolidated incidence rate of the previous week.

  • Increase in surveillance indicators in primary care and among children under 5 at SOS Médecins

  • Visits to hospital emergency departments for gastroenteritis remained at a low level and below what is typically observed during this period.

Influenza

Surveillance indicators remain stable; no active circulation of the influenza virus.

  • Sentinelles Network: The incidence rate of consultations for acute respiratory infections within the Sentinelles network of general practitioners is estimated at 32 (95% CI [9–55]).

  • SOS Médecins: low activity level (n = 98 cases of influenza/influenza-like illness)

  • Oscour®: low level with 75 emergency department visits for influenza/influenza-like illness

  • Surveillance of severe influenza cases admitted to intensive care: since October 5, 2020, no severe influenza cases have been reported by the region’s sentinel intensive care network.

  • Surveillance of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in long-term care facilities (EHPADs): Since week 40, no confirmed cases of influenza have been identified.

  • Virological surveillance: Nationwide, since Week 40.

    • The Sentinelles en ville network collected 621 samples; 2 influenza B/Victoria viruses were detected.

    • The CNR identified 17 positive influenza samples out of 41,018 samples collected.
