COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for the Île-de-France Region as of September 9, 2021
Key Points
In week 35, epidemiological indicators in Île-de-France pointed to a stabilization in the circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. However, transmission remained high in the region. The incidence rate continued to decline slightly but remained higher than the national incidence rate. Given the start of the school year and the return of Île-de-France residents to the region, the widespread circulation of the Delta variant, declining public adherence to preventive measures, and still-incomplete vaccination coverage, it is important to closely monitor the evolution of epidemiological indicators in the coming weeks.
In Île-de-France during Week 35, the incidence rate among residents of the region was 145 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and continued to decline slightly for the third consecutive week. The incidence rate was declining across all age groups except for children under 15, where it remained stable, calling for vigilance as schools reopen. The positivity rate, meanwhile, remained stable. The testing rate among residents of the Île-de-France region, although very high, continued to decline for the third consecutive week, which would partly explain the slight decline in the incidence rate.
In S35, the proportion of primary care visits for “suspected COVID-19” remained stable in SOS Médecins clinics and decreased slightly in emergency departments. At the hospital level, indicators of new hospitalizations were declining, while the number of new admissions to critical care units and the number of new deaths in hospitals among COVID-19 patients were stabilizing.
As of September 6, 72.0% of the Île-de-France population of all ages had received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 66.5% were fully vaccinated. In Week 35, the increase in vaccination coverage with at least one dose remained low and continued to slow since Week 31 among adults aged 18 and older. Among younger individuals (ages 12–17), the rate of vaccination coverage increased for the second consecutive week, consistent with the start of the school year. Against the backdrop of the resumption of school and work activities, continued high viral circulation in the Île-de-France region, and widespread transmission of the Delta variant, vaccinating all eligible individuals remains essential and must continue to be strongly encouraged. Vaccination efforts must be combined with strict adherence to other preventive measures, particularly the observance of protective measures, limiting high-risk contacts, and self-isolation in the event of symptoms, a confirmed infection, or contact with a confirmed case.
