Health Surveillance in Picardy. Epidemiological Update, July 25, 2013.
Asthma attacks: At the regional level, outpatient surveillance indicators have been declining for the past two weeks.
Allergies: At the regional level, outpatient surveillance indicators show a decrease this week. However, the weekly number of diagnoses made by SOS Médecins remains high compared to previous years. Grass pollen is still very prevalent.
Heat-related illnesses: Nationally, since early July, there has been a significant increase—though within expected ranges given the high temperatures—in emergency room visits and calls to SOS Médecins for heat-related illnesses. This trend is also observed regionally, notably with a sharp rise in heatstroke cases over the past three weeks in primary care.
Acute gastroenteritis: Nationally, the incidence of acute gastroenteritis is below the epidemic threshold. Regionally, outpatient surveillance indicators have been steadily declining since the beginning of the year, remaining below expected values and under the regional epidemic threshold (SOS Médecins data).
Emergency room visits by children under 1 year of age and adults over 75: Emergency room visits by children under 1 year of age are down this week in the departments of Aisne and Oise and generally stable in the Somme. Regarding visits by adults over 75, a slight increase is noted in Aisne and Oise. Emergency room visits by those over 75 are generally stable in the Somme.
Deaths among those aged 75 and older and 85 and older: Deaths among those aged 75 and older are slightly up this week, remaining in line with expected values and below the alert threshold. Deaths among those aged 85 and older have been generally stable in recent weeks, with figures also below the regional alert threshold.
Enhanced monitoring under the Heat Wave and Health Alert System (SACS): An expected increase in heat-related conditions—primarily heatstroke in outpatient care and hyponatremia in inpatient care—has been observed since July 7. Météo France forecasts a drop in maximum temperatures in the coming days; biometeorological indices are expected to remain below threshold values, thus not warranting the issuance of a health alert.
