Health Surveillance in Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Epidemiological Update, July 31, 2013.
Asthma attacks: At the regional level, outpatient and hospital monitoring indicators have generally been on the decline in recent weeks, although they have risen slightly this week.
Allergies: At the regional level, outpatient and hospital surveillance indicators are on the rise this week, and the continued high presence of grass pollen is keeping the allergy risk at a moderate level.
Heat-related illnesses: Nationally, since early July, there has been a notable increase—though within expected ranges given the high temperatures—in emergency room visits and calls to SOS Médecins for heat-related illnesses. Regionally, a moderate and expected increase in consultations for heat-related illnesses has also been observed in the SAUs participating in the Oscour® network and among SOS Médecins in the North over the past three weeks.
Acute gastroenteritis: Nationally, the incidence of acute gastroenteritis is below the epidemic threshold. Regionally, outpatient and inpatient surveillance indicators are generally stable and below the regional epidemic threshold (SOS Médecins data).
Emergency department visits by children under 1 year of age and adults over 75 years of age: In both departments, emergency department visits by infants under 1 year of age have been declining since mid-April. Visits by patients over 75 years of age, meanwhile, remain generally stable.
Deaths among those aged 75 and older and 85 and older: At the regional level, the number of deaths among people aged 75 and older and 85 and older remains stable and below regional alert thresholds.
Enhanced monitoring under the Heat Wave and Health Alert System (SACS): Nationally, a notable increase—though within expected proportions given the high temperatures—in emergency room visits and calls to SOS Médecins for heat-related conditions has been observed since early July (with a peak on July 22). Météo France does not forecast a prolonged heat wave for the coming days, but rather a heat spike lasting 1 to 3 days in certain departments. On Thursday, August 1, 47 departments were placed under a "yellow heat wave alert." At the regional level, a moderate and expected increase in heat-related illnesses was observed in weeks 2013-28 and 2013-29, followed by a decline at the start of week 2013-30. Météo France does not expect regional alert thresholds to be exceeded in the coming days, but forecasts high temperatures of around 32 and 33°C on Thursday and Friday, followed by a return to normal conditions starting Saturday.
